Kentucky Oaks History
The Kentucky Oaks is held every year in Louisville, Kentucky at Churchill Downs and is a thoroughbred race for three year old fillies. The first race was run in 1875. The race covers 1 1/8 miles and is held on the eve of the Kentucky Derby. The next Kentucky Oaks will be held on May 1st, 2009.

Across the Board – A bet on a horse to win, place and show.
Also Eligible – A horse officially entered, but not permitted to start unless the field is reduced by scratches below a specified number.
Blanket Finish – Horses that finish a race so closely that you could throw a blanket over them.
Blowout – A final workout before a race to sharpen a horse’s speed.
Bridge Jumper – Someone who makes large bets on short-priced favorites.
Caller – One who calls the running positions of horses in horse races.
Checked – A horse that is pulled up by its jockey when it is cut off in a race.
Claiming – Buying a horse out of a race for an entered price.

Disqualification - Change of order of finish by officials for an infraction of the rules.
